Reproducibility of the CVM method: a reply.

چکیده
Near the end of their letter, Brezniak et al quoted a sentence from our conclusion section and suggested that the conclusion is inappropriate. However, immediately preceding the quoted sentence, we wrote ‘‘Based on those findings, we might not be able to make definite predictions on the effect of these differences on the actual tooth movements. However, it is safe to conclude that different force systems produce different types of tooth movement; therefore, we would expect to see more vertical canine movement and less tipping of the adjacent teeth with passive ligation compared with conventional ligation.’’ Finally, we stated in our conclusion that the force system produced in this in-vitro study by passive self-ligation was more accurate because more consistent vertical extrusion forces (the desired force) and less mesiodistal or buccolingual forces (undesired forces) were generated. We assumed that AJO-DO readers would recognize that this is the first of many tests with the orthodontic simulator, and our data provided an example of its capabilities. It has taken 6 years to prepare and validate a 3-dimensional orthodontic force measurement tool that will be used for many tests to better understand a vaguely understood area of orthodontics. We continue to investigate the effects of the ligation method, and we are now gathering data, using a much larger sample size to be able to perform statistical tests. These data will be collected by starting the canine in the displaced position and ligating the teeth from the anterior to the posterior sequentially. We have been approached by many academics and clinicians with numerous interesting research proposals to use this device, which is giving us a unique view into the world of 3-dimensional orthodontic mechanics. We plan to start an internship program for those interested in using the University of Alberta orthodontic research laboratory to investigate specific orthodontic biomechanic applications as part of a degree program or simply out of curiosity. We thank the doctors for their input and look forward to more discussions as more evidence is published and made available to AJO-DO readers. Hisham M. Badawi Paul W. Authors’ Reply to the “Comments on the Core Vector Machines: Fast SVM Training on Very Large Data Sets”
In this reply, we report results on using the Windows binary of the CVM on the checkers and other real-world data sets. Experimental results show that the CVM is much more stable than is reported in (Loosli and Canu, 2007). Moreover, the analysis of CVM’s stopping criterion in (Loosli and Canu, 2007) is based on some connections between the traditional ν-SVM and C-SVM using the 1-norm error. Ho...
متن کاملHandgrip force steadiness in young and older adults: a reproducibility study
BACKGROUND Force steadiness is a quantitative measure of the ability to control muscle tonus. It is an independent predictor of functional performance and has shown to correlate well with different degrees of motor impairment following stroke. Despite being clinically relevant, few studies have assessed the validity of measuring force steadiness. The aim of this study was to explore the reprodu...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Dental Maturity based on Demirjian’s Method and Cervical Vertebrae Maturation Stages in Guilan patients
Introduction: Dental maturation is a useful indicator of growth. Moreover, skeletal maturation is assessed by the cervical vertebrae maturation (CVM) stages, using lateral cephalometric radiographs. This study aimed to investigate the association between Demirjian’s method and CVM stages and also to analyze the diagnostic performance of the dental maturation stages for identification of ...
متن کاملClosed vitrification of mouse oocytes using the CryoLogic vitrification method: A modification that improves developmental competence
OBJECTIVE To compare the mouse oocyte vitrification outcomes of the CryoLogic vitrification method (CVM) and the conventional open method using a Cryotop. Two CVM methods (original CVM and modified CVM) were tested. METHODS Mature oocytes obtained from female BDF-1 mice were vitrified by two-step exposure to equilibrium and vitrification solutions. Three vitrification protocols were tested on...
متن کاملValue assessment of aesthetic function of Sarbijan mountain’s rangeland using Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) South of Kerman province, Iran
Aesthetic is an added value to other precious values of rangelands and helps its ecosystem conservation. Unfortunately, there is not plenty of researches run on this issue and its probable value. Instead emphasis has put on ecosystem management especially on the basis of marketable products. In this study, the people willingness to pay for the aesthetic of Sarbijan rangeland landscapes and its ...
